The Blood Moon of Purim: A Call to Fast

As this sacred window opens tonight and into the early morning hours....

The Blood Moon of Purim: A Call to Fast

In the early morning  of Tuesday, March 3, 2026, between 4:04 and 5:02 a.m. MST, the full Worm Moon will enter total eclipse. It will reach its deepest red in the pre-dawn stillness at approximately 4:33 a.m., just before morning. Here in Utah, the blood moon will stand over us during Purim itself, the feast remembering Esther’s courage in ancient Persia.

Scripture teaches that the lights in the heavens are given for signs and seasons. Not for panic. Not for spectacle. For attention.

While I believe this moment is rich with symbolism, I'm not claiming to see it perfectly. These things invite seeking, not speculation. Understanding is uncovered through humility, prayer and personal revelation. What this eclipse ultimately signifies for us must be discerned individually before God. I offer these reflections as meditation, not declaration.

This blood moon rises while war unfolds in the Middle East. Iran’s leadership has been struck. Retaliation has begun. Abraham’s sons once again spill blood across ancient soil. T&C 165 warns that when Abraham’s blood is no longer regarded as precious, judgment follows. Section 168 contains a sobering command: the world should pray that Baghdad does not fall.

That isn’t casual language. That’s not metaphor. That is warning.

And here we are.

A red moon over Purim. Persia in the headlines again. A global call to prayer already written in our scripture.

Esther’s story wasn’t loud. It was disciplined.

When annihilation threatened her people, she didn’t rush the throne. She didn’t react in anger. She called for a three-day fast. She gathered her people. She prepared before she approached power.

Deliverance didn’t begin with accusation. It began with consecration.

The Worm Moon and the work beneath the surface

The Worm Moon carries its own symbolism. It marks the shift from winter to spring. Nothing dramatic breaks the surface yet. Beneath the soil, however, life is stirring. The earth is being prepared. What is unseen is doing the most important work.

Groundwork precedes growth.

Within our Covenant Christian community, particularly among the women, we are in a season of weight. We are wrestling with justice, governance, repentance, unity. We want to do what is right. We want to move forward faithfully.

But right action without right timing can wound a body.

The restoration unfolds as hearts conform to divine order. It doesn’t advance by speed alone. Persuasion must replace pressure. Humility must precede declaration.

A call to fast before we speak

As this blood moon approaches, I feel less urgency to pronounce and more urgency to pray.

Not to reconcile prematurely. Not to abandon accountability. Not to minimize harm. But to fast before we speak.

Esther asked for time.

I believe we should too.

Before presenting conclusions. Before solidifying statements. Before moving further in processes that carry weight in heaven.

Let us ask God for more time.

Not endless time, but a defined window to seek Him, and then to act.

Father, we are trying to do this right. We are slow because we’re wrestling. Our hearts are engaged. Our intent is to honor You. If further refining is required, please grant us time to be refined. Please don't t allow our impatience to undo what You are shaping.

The world is unstable. Nations tremble. Scripture already calls us to pray that cities not fall. Surely we can pause long enough to ensure that what we build internally is aligned with heaven.

This Purim, under a red moon, I invite those who feel led to fast and pray.

  • Pray for peace among Abraham’s sons.
  • Pray that Baghdad does not fall.
  • Pray that spilled blood would be mourned.
  • Pray that our own hands remain steady.
  • Pray that our processes be purified.

The moon stands in shadow but still reflects light.

Perhaps this is not our moment for decisive action. Perhaps this is our moment for consecrated delay.

Spring is coming. The soil is being turned. The King is still on His throne.

Let us approach wisely.
